ZOLTÁN ONCZAY
CELLIST · EDUCATOR

Music is a dialogue between tradition, discovery and human connection.

Zoltán Onczay is a Hungarian cellist and educator whose work combines concert performance, teaching, and a strong dedication to contemporary music. For his artistic achievements and contributions, he received the prestigious Artisjus Performing Artist Award in Hungary. As a soloist and chamber musician, he has performed widely across Europe, Asia, and the USA, including concerts in Japan.

He studied at the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest under László Mező, cellist of the renowned Bartók Quartet. In 2008, he earned his soloist diploma (Konzertexamen) from the Universität der Künste Berlin, where he studied with Wolfgang Boettcher as a Hindemith scholarship holder.

As a young musician, he served as principal cellist of the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra under Claudio Abbado, performing across Europe and the United States while collaborating with leading conductors and soloists. This formative experience laid a strong foundation for his subsequent career as an orchestral and chamber musician.

His distinctions include the Yamaha Award from the European Yamaha Music Foundation, the Martinů Award at the Semmering Summer Academy, as well as the Wiener Classic and Kodály awards.

As a member of the Budapest Sextet, he performed extensively across Europe and Asia between 1999 and 2003. He lived and worked in Germany from 2004 to 2015 as a member of the Kurpfälzisches Kammerorchester Mannheim and as a founder and artistic director of the “Turmsaal” chamber music concert series.

From 2015 to 2026, he served as principal cellist of the MÁV Symphony Orchestra in Budapest. Alongside his orchestral career, he has maintained a vibrant schedule as a soloist and chamber musician, performing a diverse repertoire across various musical settings.

Education and the mentorship of young musicians form a core pillar of his artistic mission. He is a founding member of the Fejes Academy, established in 2020, where he actively guides and develops the next generation of string players.

His musical horizons extend far beyond the classical canon into contemporary, electroacoustic, and improvised music, including projects featuring the electric cello. He is deeply committed to exploring innovative modes of expression while preserving a profound reverence for cello tradition.

Today, Zoltán Onczay’s professional life centers on three interconnected pillars: performing, teaching, and exploring new musical frontiers. Through concerts, education, and collaboration, he continues to champion Hungarian and international contemporary music while inspiring young artists worldwide.
